Blog Post - The Beginning
Nick’s birthday present!
After Nick and I decided to get into beekeeping, we began collecting the necessary equipment in preparation for the arrival of our bees. We purchased a couple of complete hives including brood boxes, a few deeps, and two honey supers. Of course, you have to have hive tools, entrance reducers, hive covers - all sorts of items you never think about until you actually have hives. And then there are the bee suits. A MUST HAVE item for beekeepers.
I’ve been stung quiet a few times and it’s always when I’m not properly outfitted in my bee suit, gloves, socks, and shoes. You would think I would learn!
Once you think you have all you need, there is something else you need!
Back to the bees - we picked up our first two nucs (five frames of bees each with mated queens) in May of 2020. Nick carefully placed them into our two hives.
They were happy, happy bees. We were using front feeders which was cool - you could see when they drank as a bubble would rise up to the top of the jar. We eventually graduated to quart jars instead of pint jars. They were drinking ALOT of sugar water, it seemed.
We were happy BEEKS!!!
